New York Theatre Workshop Internships - Summer 2012

New York Theatre Workshop, an award-winning Off-Broadway theatre company. is an off-Broadway theatre noted for its acclaimed and innovative productions, a workshop where artists create new work, hone their craft and collaboratively explore theatre, in the East Village located in the heart of New York’s downtown arts scene. NYTW is committed to the development of innovative theatre by supporting theatre artists at all stages of their careers.

They seek passionate and motivated college students and post-graduates interested in learning from theatre professionals and contributing to a vibrant downtown community of artists. NYTW interns receive a monthly unlimited MetroCard, plus academic credit if applicable. Interns are required to work a minimum of three full days per week, 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., with occasional extra hours for assisting with productions and events. The Summer season begins in mid-May and ends in late August; flexibility and extensions are possible.

Internships for Summer 2012 are in the following areas:

Artistic: Artistic Interns work closely with the Artistic staff, providing support for all Artistic and Workshop programming. Responsibilities include helping to facilitate our Mondays @ 3 reading series, summer residencies, and helping prepare dramaturgical support materials for our season productions.
Casting: Casting Interns work directly with our Casting Director to help coordinate and run auditions, as well as maintain casting databases. The casting intern communicates directly with agents, managers, and actors regularly.
Education: Education Interns work closely with the Director of Education to help facilitate all education and outreach initiatives, including in-school residency programs, student matinees, mentoring workshops, public programs, and Mind the Gap: Intergenerational Theatre Workshop.
Marketing/Special Events: Marketing/Special Events Interns gain hands-on experience planning and executing special events; engaging audiences through grassroots marketing, online tactics, and social media strategies; assisting with press relations, graphic design software and box office and ticketing platforms.
Development: Development Interns learn the ins and outs of fundraising by assisting with grant writing, benefit and event planning, donor relations, and opening nights. Interns gain an understanding of research, cultivation strategies and experience with key fundraising tracking tools.
Production Management: Production Management Interns work closely with the Production Manager to help conduct research into all aspects of production. They learn about keeping track of production and facilities budgets, and attend meetings with top designers, stage managers, and crew.
Technical Direction: Technical Direction Interns assist the Technical Director with coordination of builds and strikes, maintenance of equipment and materials, and construction of scenic elements. Carpentry experience is essential, and interns focus on developing technical skills.
Costume Shop: Costume Shop Interns assist the Shop Manager with the coordination of builds and strikes, maintenance of costumes, shop space, equipment and materials. Interns assist with wardrobe management, rentals, and develop sewing skills.

Shared Squared, the collective of New York’s leading startups focused on collaborative consumption, is excited to partner with Social Media Week and their crucial theme, “Empowering Change through Collaboration.” In a world of limited resources, but with unprecedented availability of information-sharing tools, collaborative consumption means applying those tools to the economic activity we do the most: consuming. 70% of the American economy is consumption-driven, overwhelmingly on the model of “buy, use, dispose.” Collaborative consumption replaces that model with “use, share and re-use.”

From Zipcar to Zaarly, collaborative consumption businesses are some of the most exciting startups in the internet ecosphere. Just as they sweep away traditional business models, they need new models for consumer communication and engagement: in a world of 20th-century businesses and legacy brands shouting “buy buy buy!,” a 21st-century startup needs to say “share, coordinate, collaborate.” How? Shared Squared has organized this panel of world-leading designers to address this new design imperative.

The event will kick off with four collaborative consumption startups, each giving a one minute pitch about their business proposition, and ending with a design challenge they face as they grow their business and their customer base. This section will take less than ten minutes. Thepanelists will discuss the challenges and promise of design in the age of collaborative consumption for the next 80 minutes, and there will be 30 minutes for question-and-answer with the audience.

Deroy Peraza is a founding partner, and creative director, at Hyperakt. His role at Hyperakt is to provide creative and visionary leadership and mentorship for the Hyperaktivisits, as well as being a hands on designer. Deroy taught at Parsons School of Design for four years and regularly speaks about design.
Khoi Vinh is the co-founder and CEO of Mixel, the world’s first social collage app, based in New York City. Its goal is to provide an unprecedentedly easy creative outlet to millions of people around the world who believe (mistakenly) that they have no artistic talent. Vinh was recently named one of “The 50 Most Influential Designers in America” by Fast Company. He is the former design director at NY Times.com, where he led the in-house design team for five years. Since 2000, he has published his thoughts on design, technology and culture at the widely read blog Subtraction.com.
Tom Nicholson is the CEO / President of Nicholson NY, dedicated to the next generation of computing, the post-PC era, where digital media and social connectivity move off the desktop and into the physical world. Mobile devices of unprecedented power and flexibility are changing the way we shop, play, socialize and consume media. Nicholson NY’s missions is to help business leaders and marketer leverage these trends to provide better products and services and differentiate their brands in the market.
Moderator, Danny Alexander is a designer strategist, an entrepreneur and explorer. He’s the Chief of Product Design at Liga Masiva and runs design strategy for Who Gives a Crap. Danny is on the faculty of SVA’s forthcoming MFA program Design for Social Innovation, and sits on the Board of Advisors for Design Impact. Global Engagement Studies Institute (GESI)

The Global Engagement Studies Institute (GESI) at Northwestern University will equip you to:

- Work in teams of undergraduates to design and implement a development project in microfinance, social enterprise, education, environmental sustainability, global health, and more.

Sample GESI Project in Uganda:
In Jinja, a GESI team worked with an NGO who serves poor and vulnerable members of society through activities in health, including HIV/AIDS, malaria control, sanitation, adolescent sexual and reproductive heath, health in schools, and immunizations. The GESI team’s goal was to improve the health programs for youth, making youth active participants in the curriculum and developing a group of peer health mentors.

Using music, dance, and drama, the team trained a group of youth on community health issues such as HIV prevention and reproductive health. Working with these newly trained “Peer Mentors” along with health professionals and drama coaches, the group developed a performance that the Peer Mentors presented at schools and community groups in order to help youth take an active, empowered role in understanding healthy lifestyle choices.

Sample GESI Project in South Africa:
In speaking with village members at their site in South Africa, the GESI team realized that people were buying bread to feed their families on a daily basis, but no bread was being produced within the community. Working with local community members, the GESI team created a bread-baking business. By facilitating conversations, the team was able to unite community partners to develop their own management structure and final recipe for the bread.

As part of the new social enterprise’s constitution, any extra profits will go toward a scholarship fund for local students. The project taught the GESI team the values of participation and inclusion, as well as human-centered development.

Career Query: Should I Worry About Summer, Now?

Career Query posts will help to answer quick questions students and alumni might have about various parts of the job / internships search: How do I start networking? What's the difference between a resume and a C.V.? Do I need a website? For further career counseling advice, the career center invites you to call or visit the Office of Career Development to schedule a meeting with a career counselor.

Q: When I returned to school, I though I'd have some time to relax. However, now I'm hearing that I should be looking for summer work and that deadlines for things are coming up soon. It's only February! I thought I had until at least the end of March! Should I really worry about the summer now?

A: The answer is yes you should start thinking about it now, but don't worry! Some internships in very competitive industries and larger companies are doing their intern search now, with deadlines for applications ending as early as the beginning of the March. However, there will still be time in early April and May to apply. Some companies, such as non-profits, only start to post during the spring.

For seniors and graduate students (who are not already in a career field they want to be in) looking for employment and those applying to internships with later deadlines, you should be doing two things: researching and networking. Research what you are exactly looking for in a job/internships and where you might want to work. You should also be networking. Join some meet-up groups in the industry you want to work in or reach out to friends and professors for connections. You should begin to cultivate a group of people who might let you know about opportunities before they get posted on websites.

Also, this is the time to take care of the things you put off doing during winter vacation. Order those contact cards, develop a LinkedIn profile, spruce up your resume, and get to some career development workshops!

New Frontiers: Anthony LaMarca (Jazz '09)

New Frontiers aims to see where alumni of The New School have traveled, metaphorically, in their job search. Alumni of various programs will be sharing their experiences of their time at The New School and beyond, discussing things such as the internships they've done, looking for work after completing their degree and will be giving advice to current students.

Some Jazz students might remember Anthony LaMarca from Internships in Music Business panel held in October. Anthony graduated from The New School of Jazz and Contemporary Music with a B.F.A. in Drum Performance. Currently he co-runs Primary Records, while performing with and serving as a producer for multiple bands including his group The Building.

CD: What was your time at the New School like?
AL: I knew very little about the school when I came, so I had few expectations. I was interested in challenging myself while I was there. I wanted to also take as many non music classes as I could. That kind of immersion in one discipline has a way of making you question things and get tired of what you are doing, or of what others are doing. So my playing changed a lot and my approach to performing and writing did as well. Or at least became more aware of what I was doing and accepting of my style and exploiting that.

CD: Did you do any internships during college? If so, what were your internship experiences like?
AL: I interned at Nonesuch of a semester, which was great. It is a small enough company that my internship actually had me doing things for the label, rather than just filing or something. That is a label that I admire as releasing a staggering amount of great music. Its that kind of model that I try to base Primary Records on; that a label doen't need to have its binding element be genre.

CD: What was your post-college job-hunting / career experience like?
AL: I was touring professionally since my second year at New School, and continued until I graduated. I began touring with St Vincent the day after classes let out my graduating year, so I didn't have that lag of "what am I going to do?!" Job hunting is a pretty tough thing these days, especially with a music degree. I am not a good teacher so I dedicate my time and efforts to performing and recording. Unless you are lucky (or maybe unlucky) enough to work constantly/be popular enough to work when you want and make money from it, its important to understand that life as a performer has ups and downs. Its something that can be financially and emotionally draining, but it is a reality.

CD: What was it like performing with David Byrne, Spoon, St. Vincent and other major artists?
AL: Its the most fun you could imagine. The St Vincent tour I did (for her "Actor" record) was exciting because she was starting to play larger venues than on her previous tour. So there was this excitement of being a part of a growing thing. And because of the scene she is in, I got to meet and perform with some musicians I really admire. Performing with David Byrne for her show at Lincoln Center was incredible because he is someone whose art has inspired my own and really had an impact on me when I was younger. There is a picture somewhere of me, David Byrne, Bryce Dessner (from The National), and Justin Vernon (of Bon Iver) all milling around the table of snacks in the greenroom. Which I really enjoy because we are all at the same level for a moment, picking a carrots. Its a nice reminder that these people are usually normal and approachable.

CD: What made you decide to create Primary Records? Do you think the label has been successful so far?
AL: I was asked by my friend Oren Kessler to start a label with him last year. He had been working at Warner for a while and had the idea to start a label, and asked if I would want to handle the music end of it. I had no reason to say no, so I said yes! This is an insane time to start a small label. People aren't buying records like before, anyone can release something on their own, why do we exist?! We started forming a roster by gathering our close friends who are doing interesting things, and built the label around the relationships of the performers and how that influences the context of the groups. And I think that's been where we are most successful, in bringing awareness to this community of artists. And bringing a group dynamic to these individual bands, thus inspiring each other to make records and play shows together.

CD: How do you balance the creative and business side of music?
AL: Oren handles the business part and is most creative there. So our partnership works in that we are each doing what we are good at and excited by. And it also helps us look at what we are doing differently. If I ran a label by myself it wouldn't last a year!

CD: What are you working on right now?
AL: With Primary I am focusing on finishing records that I've committed to already. We just finished a release for Gym, Deer and are about to send Pony Of Good Tidings' record to the pressing plant. My band, The Building, is also getting ready to release its record The Swooshy Businessman. After that I'll start recording (band) Names Of War. Everyone on the label is playing great shows around the city. I'm also starting to work with Dean & Britta on a new record they are writing.

CD: Do you feel that The New School helped you prepare for embarking on your career?
AL: I was always conflicted with the amount of freedom students have in the jazz program, but it helped me find resolve in what it was I wanted to be doing and seeking out others who were motivated as well. New School has the potential to prepare, but it takes an effort from the student as well. That's something that can probably be said for making a living as a musician in general; you have to know what you want and be pursuing that actively.

CD: Do you have any advice for Jazz students looking to pursue a career in music?
AL: Learn as much as you can. Be as open as possible, to new ideas, to people, to kinds of music. Also make sure you are checking out other mediums; painting, video, photography, writing... Make sure your compositions or even just your performing has meaning and intention. Don't be arrogant...someone is better than you!

CD: Do you have any advice for Jazz students looking to pursue a career in the music business?
AL: Work for someone who is in it for music not money.

Lark Play Development Center Internship Program

Founded in 1994, a laboratory for new voices and new ideas, the Lark Play Development Center provides playwrights with indispensable resources to develop their work, nurturing artists at all stages in their careers, and inviting them to express themselves freely in a supportive and rigorous environment. The Lark reaches into untapped local populations and across international and cultural boundaries to seek out and embrace unheard voices and diverse perspectives, celebrating differences in language and worldviews. By encouraging artists to define their own goals and creative processes in pursuit of a unique vision, the Lark believes it is reinvigorating the theater's ancient and enduring role as a public forum for discussion, debate and community engagement.

As an intern at the Lark you'll join their small staff (9 full-time employees) in helping to cultivate new plays and support emerging playwrights. They rely on interns to keep the organization running and all interns are given significant responsibility. Each intern is paired with a department head who acts as a mentor and makes sure the experience is meaningful and worthwhile for both parties. All interns are expected to undertake an individual project during their time at the Lark as well as complete administrative duties. Interns are encouraged to participate in as many Lark events as possible and to take advantage of the theatre's offerings.

* 16 - 30 hours per week, and should be able to commit to a regular schedule.
* $100 stipend. College credit may be available (check with your school for details).

Available Internships
Development: How does a not-for-profit organization raise the funds needed to operate its programs and support its artists? How are decisions made about funding priorities? This internship provides an opportunity to learn hands-on how to research foundations, corporations and individual donors, work on special projects, process contributions, work with a donor database, learn about communicating with donors, assist in preparing grant proposals and participate in individual donor cultivation. Intern will be part of Development Team including Development Manager and Development Assistant, and will also be invited to attend strategy meetings with the Managing Director and Artistic Director, as well as special events for donors. The ideal candidate is reliable, enthusiastic, organized, and carefully attentive to details. An interest in writing is desirable.

Onsite Artistic Programming: This internship works as part of the artistic team, supporting the Artistic and Literary Coordinator and the Director of Onsite Programs. Responsibilities include assisting in the preparation and implementation of various artistic programs, and requires a stage management like approach to handling program logistics. Other responsibilities may include Responsibilities may include corresponding with playwrights; supervising the distribution of new scripts; and script evaluation. Semi-regular evening availability is required in addition to select daytime hours. This internship is a great way to observe multiple approaches to new play development, with exposure to a variety of artists at different career stages. In addition, the intern is invited to serve as a member of the Lit Wing and to participate as fully as possible in the evaluation process.

Udall Foundation - Native American Congressional Internships

The Udall Foundation provides a ten-week summer internship in Washington, D.C., for Native American and Alaska Native students who wish to learn more about the federal government and issues affecting Indian Country. The internship program is funded by the Native Nations Institute for Leadership, Management, and Policy, which was founded by the Udall Foundation and The University of Arizona in 2001 as a self-determination, self-governance, and development resource for Native nations.

Interns work in congressional and agency offices where they have opportunities to research legislative issues important to tribal communities, network with key public officials and tribal advocacy groups, experience an insider's view of the federal government, and enhance their understanding of nation-building and tribal self-governance.

The Internship program provides Udall Interns with:

Hands-on practical experience in congressional and agency office placements;

Opportunities to network with policy-makers, agency officials, and national tribal advocacy organizations;

Enhanced understanding of tribal self-governance and nation-building efforts

Opportunities to learn about and research legislative issues important to tribal communities.

The Udall Foundation provides Interns with:

Placement in a Congressional office, committee or federal agency in Washington, D.C.;

Two-day Orientation to introduce Interns to Washington, D.C., and the Internship Program;

Meetings with distinguished members of Congress, directors and staff of federal agencies, and Native American professionals;

A one-day nation-building seminar with the Native Nations Institute;

Specially arranged tours of federal buildings and national museums;

Apartment-style living with on-site coordinator;

Round-trip airfare to and from Washington, D.C., and a daily allowance for meals, transportation and incidentals;

A $1,200 educational stipend upon completion of the internship.

In 2012, the Foundation expects to award 12 Internships on the basis of merit to Native Americans and Alaska Natives who:

* Have demonstrated an interest in fields related to tribal public policy, such as tribal governance, tribal law, Native American education, Native American health, Native American justice, natural resource protection, cultural preservation and revitalization, and Native American economic development.

A: You can do a lot of things. You could polish up your resume[s] (1, 2) using our resume guide. You could start working on that website that you've really been meaning to work on, or register with LinkedIn, work on your profile and join the career center's group. With winter coming there are a lot of parties for you to network with people, and for help use our networking guide. Make those contact cards to take with you.

The most important thing for you to do is to relax. If you're working on anything, it's hard to do it well if you're stressed out. You've also worked hard all semester, so you should relax as both a reward for yourself and as a way to recharge. It's called winter break for a reason.

Description / Responsibilities: Cherry Lane Theatre is offering an opportunity to an experienced film student/young professional to film and edit footage of this season’s work and past works, which includes lectures by renowned actors, playwrights and directors. What was your time at The New School like?
Provocative. Revealing. Challenging. Expensive. Decolonial. Seminal. Nurturing. Often times, ironic.

Were there any extra-curricular activities that helped you with your career development?
Women of Color Collective was my homeland at The New School. WOCC was a sanctuary for the development of womynist, feminist, queer, mujeres of color from the block. Together, we laid a deeply rooted foundation for our lives as activist, interdisciplinary artists, academics and professionals.

What were your internship experiences like?
Abundant. I spent a lot of time working in communities, learning about the specific policies affecting the lives of people of color, witnessing community struggles to confront injustice and bring change. I am grateful for all the opportunities I had to learn and support as the leaders in the community saw fit. It's super important to take lead from the community and to leave your personal agenda in the classroom. The movement for justice is in progress and is much bigger than any one individual.

What was your post-college career experience been like?
Over the last 3 years I have continued to grow politically, artistically, intellectually and spiritually. I helped found a community-based organization in rural North Carolina. I worked with youth in Sunset Park, Brooklyn on environmental justice issues. I published twice. I produced and curated multidisciplinary art shows in the Bay Area. I led grassroots campaigns in California to fight the corporate takeover of the government and the peoples' rights to healthy environments. I advocated for human and indigenous peoples' rights at international conferences on Climate Change in Bolivia and México. I've been blessed with many opportunities. I am FULL!

How have you been able to translate your community organization skills into employment? If so how?
My experience as an undergrad was successful because I was a community organizer and I treated my education both like a grassroots campaign and employment. In order to survive, I had to navigate and negotiate within The New Schools realm of rationed power and resources, and social hierarchies. The interdependent relationships I developed with my peers and mentors were key to my survival. It's really important for me to name that explicitly and address the students of color, queer people of color, homies from the block who might read this interview... Attending The New School is a privilege and is an institution filled with a whole lot of privilege, designed with this privilege in mind and not with our struggles in mind. Don't let this deter you. Do what you got to do and keep it moving. There was your life pre-New School and there is certainly a wondrous life post-New School. With my faith in Creator and the critical, strategic thinking skills I developed as a result of negotiating so much as an undergrad student has made me strong, fluid and hella employable!

What is your current job and what is it like?
I'm a consultant for CrossRoots: Building a Sustainable Movement- a consulting project that provides organizations and coalitions support in training, capacity-building, communications, event planning and short-term strategic planning. I love it! I get to work with peers who are as radical and passionate as me about justice, culture and knowledge!

What made you decide on applying to law school?
I choose a legal education because laws were and continue to be used to subjugate the environment, indigenous and queer people throughout the world- laws and policies that separate humans from the land and humans from one another. My ancestors practiced a much more intimate law system, one that was in harmony with mother earth and the well-being of everyone in the community. As the global revolutions continue to flourish, such as the “99% occupations” taking place across the world, now is the time to develop a profound understanding of the system I am inheriting and figure out how to replace it with a system rooted in love and justice.

What do you hope to accomplish during and after law school?
I plan to continue building my consulting practice and continue on this path toward liberation.

Is there any advice you would like to give to current students looking for internships and jobs?
Have faith in your Creator and take risks knowing that everything you need is within reach, right now.

Career Query: What Are Winternships?

Career Query posts will help to answer quick questions students and alumni might have about various parts of the job / internships search: How do I start networking? What's the difference between a resume and a C.V.? Do I need a website?

For further career counseling advice, the career center invites you to call or visit the Office of Career Development to schedule a meeting with a career counselor.

Q: I saw a posting for a winter internship and read a few career guidance articles about 'winternships.' What exactly are these? Is it worth it to do an internship for such a short amount of time?

A: Winter internships (winternships) are sometimes offered by companies looking to host interns for a short, 4 - 6 week time frame. This could be to work on a specific project or get acclimated to the organization with the intent of coming back for a spring or summer placement.

If you can commit the time and don't mind spending your time off working, its a great chance to gain valuable experience and make connections. Here are some tips on what to think about when applying for these kinds of short-term internships:

What is the time commitment?
What are the duties and responsibilities?
What will I be learning in this short amount of time?
Will I have the opportunity to shadow other departments or people during this time?

Internship with The Grio / NBC News

TheGrio is NBC’s video-centric news website dedicated to producing stories of African-American interest. At just over two years old, the site is one of NBC News’ fastest growing new ventures.

Intern candidates for theGrio should have a strong interest in African-American news and culture. They should have experience in web production, publishing and writing for the web, and editing on Avid. Experience shooting and producing original video content is preferred.

In a tight-knit and fast-paced work environment much like many Internet start-ups, theGrio’s interns will gain hands-on experience running the website. They will also have the opportunity to assist digital journalists and the site’s editors with pre-production, fieldwork and editing multiple 2 – 3 minute daily news packages that will live on the site – and are often broadcast on NBC affiliates and other platforms.

New Frontiers: Marwa Helal (NSPE '11)

New Frontiers aims to see where alumni of The New School have traveled, metaphorically, in their job search.

Alumni of various programs will be sharing their experiences of their time at The New School and beyond, discussing things such as the internships they've done, looking for work after completing their degree and will be giving advice to current students.

Marwa Helal received her undergraduate degree in Journalism and International Studies from Ohio Wesleyan University, and her MFA in Creative Writing from The New School. She is co-founder, and creative and editorial director of FEN Magazine-- an online magazine, which covers Arab-American art and artists. She currently works as the Communications and Web Content Manager at New York University.

Career Development: How did you decide on going to graduate school and what made you choose New School?
Marwa Helal: I decided to go to graduate school after I spent some time in what I thought was my dream job-- working at one of my favorite English language magazines in Cairo, Egypt. Almost one year into it I started to think, if this is my dream job-- it isn't enough. Although it was a monthly magazine, I still felt that the production and writing that went into it was sloppy, incomplete and fluffy or shallow. I wanted the chance to tell better stories, go more in-depth and really take the time to know my subject. After returning to the U.S., I decided it was time to go back to graduate school -- I had applied to several programs before but had always backed out when it came time to commit. The New School offered something different -- it was hands-on (not just theory) and promised to challenge me as a writer and open me up to the creative experimentation I yearned for.

CD: What was your time at The New School like?
MH: My time at The New School was certainly challenging. As with any large institution, you have to work to find the diamonds in the rough. Along with a few classmates who I remain close with, my thesis advisor Zia Jaffrey was an invaluable mentor who continues to push me to publish my work. Director of the MFA program, Robert Polito was also one of my favorite workshop professors-- he exposed us to new forms of writing and structure that translated into some breakthrough work for me on the page. There is certainly never a lack of readings on or off campus-- whether it's a ticket to the National Book Awards or a GRANTA Magazine reading-- one of my favorite things was the access the program gave us to literature's living heavy hitters.

CD: Did you ever use the Office of Career Development? If so, how did the office help you with your career goals?
The Office of Career Development is one of the true gifts at The New School. Nicole and Rosanne really encouraged and nurtured me when I started to get impatient about my job hunt. I'm very thankful to them for that. They provided me with everything from resume and cover letter tips, to endless resources specifically for writers and list-serves with continuously updated job openings. I also happened upon one of the Myers-Briggs Type workshops one afternoon, which helped me pinpoint where I could improve my dealings with freelance clients and manage my stress more effectively. But as it is with any program provided, you have to put the time into job-hunting and following through with the tools the Office of Career Development gives you.

CD: Were there any extra-curricular activities that helped you with your career development?
MH: I've always been involved in whatever-school-I-was-going-to's-newspaper -- that's where I picked up my extra design skill set, while finding a place to publish my writing-- both journalism and poetry and practice my editing skills.

CD: What made you decide to start FEN Magazine?
MH: FEN was borne out of a need to encourage people in immigrant communities to pursue and/or support the arts and careers in the arts. Too often, children of immigrants are given exactly four options of professions: doctor, lawyer, engineer or accountant. FEN is a venue for young people to share their work, it's a chance for up and coming artists who might not get space in the NY Times Arts pages, but are doing work worthy of it, to get some press. While FEN is targeted at the Arab-American community, the intent and message are universal. Our readers reach from New York City to Sydney, Australia.

CD: Three years later, do you think you have accomplished, or begun to accomplish, what you set out to do with FEN?
MH: FEN is actually only going on two years of being live! We spent the first year on planning, and business and web development -- but to answer your question, I have to say, we're just getting started. We have a great and supportive readership that makes us want to keep growing and pushing our limits. As such, we're currently going through a reformat and I'm excited to see what the feedback will be!

CD: Do you think your Master's degree has helped you, and if it has, how has it helped you?
MH: My Master's has definitely helped me -- I'm a better and faster writer and editor because of it-- and I don't think I would have been as competitive a candidate without it. I also feel more confident in my writing abilities and am currently preparing pieces of my thesis for publication.

CD: What is your current job and what is it like?
MH: I'm currently working as the Communications and Web Content Manager at the Office of Global Programs at NYU. It's very engaging work and I get to do everything from writing and editing to designing for web and print-- so there's a great range and it's never boring. Most importantly, I love the team I work with and can easily say my boss is awesome!

CD: What personal writing projects are you working on (outside of the magazine)?
MH: Like any artist, I've always got a few things brewing on the stove-- I'm working on polishing pieces of my thesis for publication and I continue to freelance for news outlets and magazines-- with the Arab Spring (now Winter) in the news, there is a great opportunity to contribute an Egyptian perspective and provide interviews with key people your average journalist wouldn't have access to. I'm also in discussions with more established authors about collaborating on an anthology-- but that's a secret surprise in the works...

CD: How do you balance your job, the magazine and writing?
MH: The job comes first, because a) it's the most time-consuming and b) it pays the bills. The magazine and writing take turns taking up my attention during my off hours. Creativity is spontaneous, so I think about all three (the job, magazine and writing) all the time -- a to do list and an "ideas book" help me keep it all straight -- but I don't stress myself out over the magazine or the writing, otherwise they wouldn't be fun.

CD: Is there any advice you would like to give to current students looking for internships and jobs?
MH: Don't settle for something you don't like. Finding good work is like finding a good friend or mate -- you want it to be something that will build you/your resume up and reflects your potential. Jay-Z says it best with this lyric: "It ain't where I been, but where I'm bout to go..." The opportunities are there, you just have to be a balanced combination of aggressive, patient and persistent. And there are plenty of ways to make money until you do find that perfect job -- I highly recommend freelancing as a great way to narrow down what you really want to do.

CD: Is there any advice you would like to give to potential writers?
MH: If it isn't your passion, don't bother. There are millions of people who think they are great writers, and maybe they are -- but it's passion that will wake you up wanting to tell the story, it's passion that keeps you in your chair until you're pleased with a piece, it's passion that will make you want to keep trying, and it's passion that doesn't care what the critics might say.

"Career Development Workshop Teaches the Art of Obituary-Writing"

The New School Office of Career Development held a “Write Your Own Obituary” workshop on Thursday, October 27, at 79 Fifth Avenue, room 501.

The event was organized by Jennifer Rupert, Assistant Director of Career Development at The New School.

Once the obituaries were written, attendees passed them around for another person to read them out loud. Three attendees from The New School wrote and discussed their own obituaries. Then they were asked to identify three themes in them.

Nicole Wolfrath, Associate Director of Career Development, read the obituary of Evan Warren, a currently unemployed New School alumni and found his themes to be a detailed fantasy. Warren, a frequent reader of The New York Times obituary section, referred to himself as “a front man” with “a six-decade-long career” and a passion for acting and performing.

“I’m interested in seeing how different people’s lives ended, especially with actors,” Warren said.

The attendees also related their obituaries to the recession.

“When I looked at [my own obituary], it is a real indicator where the economy is now,” said Wolfrath. “There are so many variables [that are] oppressing to our dreams.”

Before Rupert organized the workshop, she wrote her obituary in a New York University class for career counselors. Leading up to the event, she encouraged people to attend, but she admitted that many were either afraid or nervous.

Alex Tunney, a Creative Writing student and Program Assistant for Office of Career Development attended. “I was nervous in putting it down [in words] but I felt like at the same time, this would help me figure some stuff out.”

When Rupert asked Warren and Tunney if she should hold this event again next year, they both said, “Yes!”

Weekly Mentor Program Internship
The Weekly Mentor Program (WMP) is a 25-week arts-based mentoring program that provides youth ages 6-13 with regular opportunities to express themselves creatively and engage with positive adult role models.

Led by Professional Facilitators, teams of volunteer mentors use theme-based curricula to guide groups of youth through creating and discussing visual art projects – a process that serves as a catalyst to help youth strengthen critical communication and social skills, and build positive relationships with peers and adults. The program runs during the academic year, and its mentor-to-child ratio is 1:2 or 1:3.

WMP Interns can expect to assist the WMP Manager with the following tasks:
• coordinating volunteer communications (event sign-ups, occasional mailings, etc)
• preparing for Weekly Mentor Trainings, Curriculum Reviews and Art Parties
• developing and preparing curriculum materials
• creating sample art projects
• entering enrollment data in Free Arts NYC’s custom Enrollment Database

Free Arts Day Internship
Free Arts Days are day-long events in Manhattan that provide a group of 75 children ages 6 - 12 years with a festival day of theme-based arts activities. Throughout the day, the pairs rotate through five multi-media arts projects based on the day's theme, giving them the opportunity to explore different art materials and techniques. The day closes with lunch followed by an interactive performance that further explores the theme of the day.

Free Arts Day Interns will be encouraged to attend as many of the programs as possible and will be scheduled at the start of the internship. working "in the field" in their programs and "behind the scenes" at their offices creates the highest quality internship we can offer.

Dramatists Guild of America Internships

The Dramatists Guild of America is seeking interns to work in the areas of membership, education, outreach, publication and office management.

The Dramatists Guild of America was established over eighty years ago, and is the only professional association which advances the interests of playwrights, composers and lyricists. The Guild has over 6,000 members world-wide, from beginning writers to the most prominent authors represented on Broadway, Off-Broadway and in regional theatres. The Guild’s Board of Directors-- elected from its membership-- currently includes such writers as Stephen Sondheim, Edward Albee, Marsha Norman, Tony Kushner, David Auburn, David Henry Hwang, Stephen Schwartz and Lynn Nottage.

Hours are completely flexible, though they would prefer at least a minimum four-hour block of time per day, for a total of 12-20 hours per week. The internship is unpaid, but school credit is possible. The Guild’s offices are open from 9:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. Monday - Friday and are located in the center of the very lively Times Square area.

Career Query: Do I Put Retail On My Resume?

Career Query posts will help to answer quick questions students and alumni might have about various parts of the job / internships search: How do I start networking? What's the difference between a resume and a C.V.? Do I need a website?

For further career counseling advice, the career center invites you to call or visit the Office of Career Development to schedule a meeting with a career counselor.

Q: I'm currently applying for jobs that are in my studied career field. I have some internships to put on my resume, but the rest of my work experience is in retail. Should I put those jobs on my resume as well?

A: It wouldn't hurt depending on how you frame your experience. One of the benefits of putting a retail position on is that it highlights transferable skills. These skills will make you marketable for a number of positions and its important to emphasize these as employers seek various levels of experience in this recession.

As we've said here, we suggest you focus on the accomplishments and how each experience relates to the potential job as you construct your resume. You don't have to list every single job function, but enough to paint a vivid picture of your skill set. Here are some things to consider when describing your work experience:
-- Most retail positions are heavy on customer service which would be a good thing to mention when applying to a job dealing with the general public. This highlights communications skills and how you behave on the job.
-- If you've worked at a job for over a year, that might signal to an employer that you are consistent and dedicated and have good time management skills.
-- Any position in management, including key holders, shows that you can be a leader. Leadership skills are important and something every employer looks for. You don't have to be the boss to have others seek your guidance.

Think hard about what you do, you might be surprised at what you have accomplished after seeing it on paper.

We Are New York - Volunteer Facilitators

Organization Description:
There are 1.8 million adult immigrant New Yorkers who need help with English. English language proficiency is an important factor in determining accessibility to health, social, educational and employment services. With this in mind, the Emmy Award-winning television series, We Are New York, was created to help adult immigrants learn English. The WANY Project brings together community organizations and volunteers to offer free English conversation groups in neighborhoods around New York City. Using We Are New York, the groups discuss issues that most concern immigrants. The project empowers adult immigrants by informing them about city resources while helping them learn English.

Volunteer Facilitators:
We Are New York facilitators are students, seniors and working professionals who commit their time to helping adult immigrants practice English. Scheduling is flexible with evening and weekend placement options in all five boroughs. The only requirements are that the volunteer knows English, is outgoing, and is interested in New York’s diverse immigrant population. Register to attend a training under the volunteer tab here.

Commitment:
• Facilitators commit to leading 10 two-hour classes. Classes may occur once weekly for ten weeks, or twice weekly for five weeks.
• Facilitators attend six hours of training split into two sessions before placement leading a group; there is also a 3-hour refresher training held after the third session.

Alumni of various programs will be sharing their experiences of their time at The New School and beyond, discussing things such as the internships they've done, looking for work after completing their degree and will be giving advice to current students.

Some Jazz students might remember Talia Billig from Internships in Music Business panel held in October. Talia graduated from The New School of Jazz and Contemporary Music with a B.F.A. in Vocal Performance and from Eugene Lang College with a B.A. in Psychology. Career Development: What was your time at The New School like?
Talia Billig: My time at the New School was... hectic. I was a BA/BFA student, and I worked throughout college. I waitressed my first two years of college. Then I got my internship at Blue Note my junior year, and was working about 25-30 hours a week along with school, so I didn't sleep too much! But it was wonderful to go to such a nurturing school in terms of my music. They really allowed me to build my schedule alongside the internship/subsequent job.

CD: Did you ever use the Office of Career Development? If so, how did the office help you with your career goals?
TB: I did! I visited the lovely Nicole Wolfrath once or twice, to review my resume and discuss wider career goals. In the end though, I got my internship through The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music.

CD: Were there any extra-curricular activities that helped you with your career development?
TB: I only had one internship. It was very intense and eventually led to my job. I interned at Blue Note Records. The team was fairly small, so I had a lot of responsibility. I got on extremely well with my supervisor and the CEO of the record label, which is eventually how I got my job (I now work for him).

CD: What was your post-college career experience been like?
TB: My post-college career experience has been fantastic. Like I said, I was so busy in college that I thought I might just one day spontaneously combust. Now that I am out of college, I am fully devoting myself to my career goal, which is singing. My band and I will be going into the studio on November 5th to record my first album, The Ripple Effect. It will be a full album, 9 songs, all written by me. It features almost entirely New School alumni, down to the engineer recording it! I am beyond excited. We're booking fairly extensive tours for its spring release.

CD: What is your current job and what is it like?
TB: I also continue to work at Blue Note Records and it is wonderful. I work for Bruce Lundvall, who is one of the last living legends in the music business (signed Norah Jones, Herbie Hancock, James Taylor, Willie Nelson, to name a few). I learn every day and am inspired by the fantastic artists on the roster.

CD: How do you balance the business side and the creative side of music?

TB: That is a difficult one, no question about it. Really the only way to balance it is to be extremely focused. My nights and weekends are for my music. I do not make exceptions. I carry around a journal with me at all points at work in case I get ideas for new songs. So far it has been going really well, though again, when the tours come up it could prove to be a problem. We'll cross that bridge when we come to it!

CD: Is there any advice you would like to give to current students looking for internships and jobs?

TB: Work hard, and get to know the people you are working with. Also: Make jokes! Laugh a lot!

CD: Is there any advice you would like to give to current students pursing a musical career?

TB: Play a lot. Play with a lot of people. Most importantly, play with people you love. Whether you are writing original music or not, your music will be exponentially better if you are your happiest while playing it. Be honest to yourself and others will feel and understand it.

Opportunities at the New SAGE Center

It was announced recently that Services & Advocacy for GLBT Elders (SAGE) was awarded an Innovative Senior Center (ISC) contract to open the nation's first full-time center for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) older adults. The SAGE Center is planned to open January 2012 and will include program sites in all five New York City boroughs—bringing a comprehensive array of services and support to LGBT elders throughout the city.

In addition to the robust array of programs SAGE currently provides at the LGBT Community Center and SAGE Harlem, the new Center will offer hot meals, programs covering issues from health and wellness to workplace skills, comprehensive social services, a wide range of social activities, and much more.

There are many job opportunities currently available at the new center:

Administrative Assistant
The primary function of the Administrative Assistant is to provide essential administrative support to The SAGE Center staff and maintain and coordinate data collection and reporting through SPP (Senior Participant Profile). The Administrative Assistant reports to the SAGE Center Program Manager. The Administrative Assistant must have experience working with DFTA funded programs and DFTA reporting systems.

Citywide Outreach Coordinator
The primary function of the Citywide Outreach Coordinator is to create linkages with aging service providers throughout New York City in support of collaborative relationships between The SAGE Center and area providers. The Citywide Outreach Coordinator will also provide wellness, socialization and educational programming to LGBT older adults through The SAGE Center at all satellite sites in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island. The Citywide Outreach Coordinator must have some experience working with aging and /or LGBT communities.

Food Service Coordinator
The primary function of the Food Service Coordinator, under the direction of the Program Director or designed plan is to organize and direct food service operation to assure compliance with required nutrition sanitation and safety established by New York City Department for the Aging and Department of Health.

Outreach Case Worker
The primary function of the Outreach Case Worker is to provide case assistance, information and referral and benefits programming for The SAGE Center at satellite sites in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and State Island. The Outreach Case Worker will also conduct on-going assessment of eligible participants and liaison between The SAGE Center and SAGE’s Social Services Department. The Outreach Case Worker reports to the SAGE Center Social Worker. The Outreach Case Worker must have B.A. in Social Work or a related field and experience working with aging and /or LGBT communities. Bilingual (Spanish) required.

Program Manager
Provide administrative oversight, management, supervision and consultation to staff of the The SAGE Center. Ensures compliance with Agency Policy and Governmental regulations. The Program Manager must have experience with aging service provision in a senior center setting as well as the data tracking and reporting procedures of the New York City Department for the Aging. The Program Manager will be required to sustain robust programming in collaboration with staff and community partners in multiple sites.

Social Worker
The primary function of the Social Worker is to oversee case assistance, information and referral and benefits programming for The SAGE Center. The Social Worker will also conduct on-going assessments of eligible participants and liaison between The SAGE Center and SAGE’s Social Services Department. The Social Worker must have an LCSW/LMSW and experience working with aging and /or LGBT communities. Bilingual (Spanish) is preferred.

Wellness Coordinator 1
The primary function of the Wellness Coordinator 1 is to provide wellness, socialization and educational classes and activities to LGBT older adults through The SAGE Center’s location in Manhattan. The Wellness Coordinator must have some experience working with aging and /or LGBT communities in a a group setting. The Wellness Coordinator should ideally have experience in programmatic design and implementation

Career Query: How Can a Certificate Program Help Me?

For further career counseling advice, the career center invites you to call or visit the Office of Career Development to schedule a meeting with a career counselor.

Q: I have been considering continuing my education beyond my bachelor's degree. While I have been thinking about master's programs, I also have been looking at certificate programs. What are some of the benefits of certificate programs, especially in regards to my career?

A: First, it would help to define what a certificate is, so let's use the basic dictionary.com definition: "...a document attesting to the fact that a person has completed an educational course..." The most basic function of a certificate program is to provide formal, and most importantly, standard education and/or training by an expert and documented proof of attendance and completion of said program.

Certificate programs are specific in the education they provide. Often, students might enroll in order to fill what they consider a hole in their education. In some fields, enrollment in a certification program is sometimes required by employers in order to keep employees up-to-date with current information about their field.

As for benefits of certification, there a few:

Sometimes certificate programs are cheaper in relation to other types of post-undergraduate education, like master's programs. (That said, the time commitment in a program might range from a Saturday or two to a year long full-time program.)
While education is always important, it's also nice when you can add something to your resume. Completing a certificate program might signal to employer that you can commit to something and your additional education might give a potential edge over other job applicants.
Your fellow certificate program students are often ambitious people looking to improve themselves and excel in their fields, which makes them great people to build professional relationships with.

Glenn Zaleski has been studying piano since elementary school and by the time he reached college he had already received a number of honors. Starting his undergraduate career at the University of the Pacific, he completed his Bachelors of Fine Arts in Jazz Performance at The New School in 2009. Career Development: What was your time at The New School like?
Glenn Zaleski: While I was at the New School I had incredible opportunities to learn from a diverse faculty and student body. On a daily basis I was exposed to the tradition of jazz from an older generation of legendary teachers, as well as the cutting edge of contemporary music.

CD: Were there any extra-curricular activities that helped you with your career development?
GZ: The New School offered a number of extra-curricular performance opportunities that have been very important to my development. Most noteworthy was an opportunity to play for a week at the 2009 Bern Jazz Festival. With an amazing band (Yotam Silberstein, Rick Rosato and Cory Cox), we played three sets a night for 5 nights in a row, and playing on the main stage opposite us was Ahmad Jamal! Also in 2009, I attended the IASJ conference in Luzern, Switzerland, under the artistic direction of Dave Liebman. This was an amazing opportunity to meet people from around the globe and share each others' music.

CD: What was it like working on the Duet Suite album?
GZ: Since I was thirteen years old I had been playing duo gigs around Central Massachusetts with Mark, so working on Duet Suite with my brother was very natural. We have had more than ten years of performance experience together-- and not to mention 18 years of living together, so we have a very comfortable and open relationship musically.

CD: What are you working on right now?
GZ: Right now I am co-leading a trio with drummer Colin Stranahan and bassist Rick Rosato (both New School Alumni). Our debut CD, Anticipation, was released on Capri records on October 18th. At the beginning of October we began our first international tour as a trio, where we will be performing in Canada, Spain, Poland and Hungary. And joining us for some of the dates in Poland will be another New School Alumni, guitarist Rafal Sarnecki. I am very excited about this trio!

CD: How do you balance the business side and the creative side of music?
GZ: I try my hardest to show up on time, keep my schedule organized, and get back to people as quickly as I can. Other than that, I don't think much about the "business" side of music. My daily focus is on playing the piano.

CD: Is there any advice you would like to give to current Jazz students?
GZ: Practice as much as you can! And learn tunes!

Q: So I've been networking with people, but exchanging contact information has been hard. Giving out my resume seems too pushy, so I was considering getting some business cards, but they seemed too formal. Am I wrong?

A: Consider making yourself a contact card. It's roughly the same thing as a business card, but for individuals. You do not have to be employed to have a contact card; the card represents you, not the job you have-- although it may represent the job you might like to have! You would put your name, some contact info (e-mail, phone number) and perhaps a title (ex. musician, artist, writer).

As for how your contact card should look, you want something that reflects your personality, so the receiver of the card remembers you. However, you also want something simple and legible. After you are done designing your card, show it to people before you have it printed. A card can be memorable if it is well designed, but it also can be equally as memorable if it is poorly designed.

Check out this post (found thanks to the Parsons Career Blog), where someone sent ordered business / contact cards from 5 different websites, including Moo and Vistaprint. At the end he compares and contrasts the results.

Word Above the Street seeks creative, tech savvy, go-getter interns for their inaugural large-scale public art project in New York City to promote water sustainability.

The ideal candidate would be very organized and possess the ability to move in a smart dynamic setting with access to high-level donors, artists, and government officials. The ideal candidate would work as a member of the well-seasoned Word Above the Street team under the supervision of both the Creative and Executive Directors. A strong passion for art, sustainability, architecture or urban planning is preferable.

Key responsibilities include:

Contributing to all aspects of the project’s research, planning, and communications.
Producing quality research on selected topics, artists, building and cultural resources. Intern will be expected to produce drafts of artist proposals and find creative ways of overcoming research obstacles.
Communicating effectively with both artists and real estate agencies to secure legal agreements.
Interest in curatorial and real estate administrative tasks and willing to assist in grant writing.

Volunteer Service Assistant @ VISIONS / Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired
Description: VISIONS’ Intergenerational Program recruits and trains students, 15 years of age and over, to assist seniors who are blind. Working in pairs, the youth travel to the homes of seniors to visit, read, shop, do errands and/or escort them within the neighborhood. These friendly visits help to decrease the loneliness and isolation often experienced by homebound elders. Students will also be participating in a variety of intergenerational activities, workshops and training seminars.

Join author Kyla Bender-Baird, The Queer Commons and Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund (TLDEF) for a community forum on navigating the complexities of employment for trans, gender nonconforming and queer identified people. Bender-Baird will share stories from her recently released book, Transgender Employment Experiences, bringing together the workplace experiences of transgender people with a discussion around NYC-specific policy and intersections of age, race, class, dis/ability, gender and immigrant status in employment issues.

Part academic discussion, part community knowledge share, representatives from local organizations serving queer and trans people will also be on hand to share resources. Their interactive format will provide ample opportunity for participants to share experiences and information with peers.

While at the Council, Kyla co-founded its Emerging Leaders Network, offering professional development and networking opportunities to young women in the non-profit sector. Originally from Oregon, Kyla has been a happy resident of Brooklyn, NY for nearly three years. She blogs for Girl w/ Pen and Ms. Magazine.

Noah Lewis is a Staff Attorney at Transgender Legal Defense &Education Fund. TLDEF is committed to ending discrimination based upon gender identity and expression and to achieving equality for transgender people. New Frontiers: Karen La Chiana (NSPE '07)

New Frontiers aims to see where alumni of The New School have traveled, metaphorically, in their job search.

Alumni of various programs will be sharing their experiences of their time at The New School and beyond, discussing things such as the internships they've done, looking for work after completing their degree and will be giving advice to current students.

Over the years Karen LaChiana (NSPE, formerly NSGS, School of Media '07) has worked for NBC, Comedy Central, ESPN, WebMD and she now currently works at Macy's-- or more accurately-- Macys.com. She is no stranger to social media; at each company she is or was helping to shape their online brands in one way or another. Attendees of the Share This! Careers in Social Media panel, which took place last semester, might remember Karen as one of the panelists. During the panel she shared her experiences in the field and gave advice to interested students. For those unable to attend, she graciously shared her insights with the office for the blog.

Career Development: How did you decide on going to graduate school and what made you choose New School?

Karen LaChiana: I was working in the role of website Producer for a few years at Comedy Central, and I wanted to continue to grow within the company. I felt it was necessary to update my skills to better understand the growing and changing industry, and it was also important to understand the work my colleagues were doing so I would clearly understand the timing and work involved. My company offered tuition reimbursement, so I decided to look into some Master programs. I had previously taken an HTML course at the New School, and I enjoyed it. I heard about their media management certificate program and attended an Open House. I followed up with more research and decided the New School Master in Media Studies program offered a variety of courses that would help in my career along with the management certificate program.

CD: What was your time at The New School like?
KL: I enjoyed the New School very much. The seasoned professors combined their real life experience in the classroom and beyond. They were encouraging and very supportive. The production courses offered hands on experience that I grasped and found very fulfilling. This experience encouraged working closely with the other students on projects and helped build friendships and camaraderie along the way.

CD: Did you ever use the Office of Career Development? If so, how did the office help you with your career goals?
KL: Yes, I used this office right after graduation in 2007 as I had left my job a few months earlier. I met over a months with (Assistant Director) Jennifer Rupert who offered advice on resume writing and job searching tips. A few years later, I was unemployed and job searching again. I met with (Director) Rosanne Sonatore during a walk in session for alumni and continued to meet with her as often as I could. Her advice, encouragement, and honesty helped me immensely while I soul searched about what I wanted to do with my career. I took a few seminars offered by their office and met with a few other counselors in the department. I found the resources offered by the Career Development office a valuable asset.

CD: What was it like working and going to school at the same time?
KL: It was challenging at times to work full time and complete the Masters program, but I enjoyed the courses and worked hard. I was often able to bring what I learned in the classroom back to my job role, and this helped me increase my skills as a student and an employee. I was committed and spent a lot of my free time studying, doing homework, and working on projects outside of the classroom. The New School was accommodating to students who worked full time, and the night course schedules worked well for me. I also spent a lot of weekends at the library or at the computer lab.

CD: Do you think your Master's degree has helped you, and if it has, how has it helped you?
KL: Yes, personally it was a great accomplishment to complete the program and challenge myself. My skill set has increased, and I’ve gained real hands on experience in video production and digital design. I learned the areas that are the most interesting to me, and I am pursuing them. Completing my Master’s degree also makes me more marketable in the workforce.

CD: What was your post-grad school job-hunting experience like?
KL: I worked very hard at networking with people within my industry as well as doing a lot of informational interviews to get my name out there and to learn about how others got their start and how they worked their way to a successful career. I often asked people for career advice and received referrals to others who might be willing to help.

CD: What is your current job and what is it like?
KL: I am a Producer for Macys.com, and I am responsible for the execution of seasonal corporate branding campaigns, the management of e-commerce/digital content, and I am the liaison between IT and the corporate business teams. The campaigns I produce are sitelets, mobile and tablet platforms as well as social media initiatives. I work closely with many teams throughout the organization. I’ve been here one year in October, and I have gained much knowledge while here. The workload is large and the process can be challenging at times. There is great potential for growth and opportunity, and I am fortunate.

CD: What role do you think social media plays in the modern day job search?
KL: Social media is the wave of the future and the present. Individuals and corporations are using social media in many ways including the job search. Most companies post their jobs online and expect potential candidates to apply for positions online. LinkedIn is a valuable resource for the job hunter, recruiter, and potential employer. It’s a great networking tool to use to introduce yourself to others, to reconnect with colleagues, to look for job opportunities, and to join groups that you are interested in.

CD: Is there any advice you would like to give to current students looking for internships and entry-level jobs?
KL: I would advise anyone to continue to build networks and to learn from everyone you meet. Be coachable and be a professional. Have confidence, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Communication is key to building relationships as well as preparation.

There is no question that Start Something: Why Every Creative Needs to Be an Entrepreneur at The New School (my alma mater!), was one of our best events yet. We are so grateful to The New School for hosting us and we plan on doing another event with them in the Spring.

Here’s a recap in case you missed it:

Nicole Wolfrath, Associate Director of the Office of Career Development at The New School, kicked off the evening by welcoming the 150+ crowd of students, recent grads, and professionals pursuing everything from writing to product development. Next, Sarah Rapp, Community Manager for our sponsor Behance, got a chance to speak to the crowd about Behance’s mission and latest initiatives. (Many thanks to Behance for graciously donating notebooks and free trials to The Action Method to our attendees).

Then it was time for the panel to get started! NY Creative Interns President and Co-Founder, Emily Miethner, was the host and moderator of the evening, leading the discussion and asking probing and insightful questions.

There was a great energy in the room, which seemed to prompt our panelists to feel free to share their advice – and speak openly and honestly about the joys and struggles of being a creative entrepreneur.

Some key takeaways from night:

Find a mentor. Connect with people you admire, ask them to have coffee with you and get their advice. It can be that simple. Leigh Ann Tucker drove home the importance of asking your mentor what you want to know and not expecting them to read your mind.
Try new things and fail quickly. One of Lauren Leto’s more memorable quotes of the night: “Kill your darlings.” An idea might mean a lot to you, but if it isn’t working, let it go.
Fake it until you make it. You don’t have to be established to start a business or a project. Start working and learn as you go.
Follow your passion and the money will follow. Laurel Touby says this an idealistic way of thinking, but it’s true. She started Mediabistro as a way to meet guys and turned it into a multi-million dollar business.
Stay organized on the business side so you can focus on creativity. Audacia Ray says hiring someone to do administrative work for her part-time was one of the best decisions she ever made. It freed her up to do the things she really wanted to do.

After the Q&A, we opened up the floor so that attendees could ask questions. When all was said and done, the panelists were kind enough to stick around and talk to students one-on-one. It was an incredible night and everyone walked away with some amazing lessons and insights.

A huge thank you to everyone who came out, our panelists, The New School, Behance, and nextNY Digital. We can’t wait to do it again.

Career Query: What Shouldn't I Put On My Resume?

Career Query posts will help to answer quick questions students and alumni might have about various parts of the job / internships search: How do I start networking? What's the difference between a resume and a C.V.? Do I need a website?

For further career counseling advice, the career center invites you to call or visit the Office of Career Development to schedule a meeting with a career counselor.

Q: My resume is roughly one and a half pages and I'm worried that it might be a little too long. How can I shorten it to improve the chances it will get looked at by an employer?

A: Your instinct about resume length is on the mark. Resumes should be 1-2 pages, especially during your college years. For those who have a lot of work experience and/or advanced degree(s), two pages is acceptable and anything beyond two pages is usually acceptable only if you're in a leadership position at a major company or institution.

One of the most important things you can remove from your resume is things about your work experience that do not fit in with experience and skills the potential job requires. The first few resumes are hard because you have very little space to shape your resume with the little career experience you have, however you should resist the urge to list all the job functions of each job you have had. Instead, focus on the accomplishments and how each experience relates to the potential job as you construct your resume. Don't let this discourage you from adding high school and/or college activities if you were highly active in an organization or maintained a leadership role.

Another important thing to remove, for those who are most advanced in their careers, is things that do not give a potential employer a recent picture of yourself. If you are no longer involved in an organization or jobs listed that are far from recent, take them off unless they are relevant.

Here are some other things you can consider cutting from you resume:

Hobbies: Getting rid of hobbies is a good bet when you're strapped for space on the page. However, in some job and career fields, including this information is a chance to show that you are well-rounded. If you're going to include your hobbies, be specific (For example, don't just write "Reading") and be prepared to talk about how aspects of your hobbies are relevant to the job.
References: The line "References are available on request" is unnecessary, as employers who require references will request them as part of the application process.
Photos and Personal Information: In some countries it is custom to include this information, but in the United States it is considered unnecessary. One exception to this rule are actors, who should include a physical profile and headshot alongside their acting resume. (See example resumes on The New School for Drama page.)

The Cable Center invites juniors, seniors, and graduate students interested in media, technology, and/or entertainment to the Cable Mavericks Masters Forum: One-Day Degree in Cable.

The forum is part of The Center’s Cable Mavericks Lecture Series, an ongoing program in which cable's top executives visit universities and colleges to talk to students about cable industry careers while providing faculty with new perspectives for enhancing research and instruction.

Executives from leading organizations such as IFCtv, Sundance Channel, Time Warner Cable, C-SPAN, HBO, and Motorola, will discuss the cable industry’s evolution in the multiscreen era and the increasingly complex relationship between television entertainment and technology.

The event will conclude with a recruitment hall, where students will have an opportunity to conduct mock interviews with corporate recruiters from top media companies. Interviewers will give students expert advice on best interview practices, and they will provide valuable feedback so that students can fine-tune their interview techniques. Students will also have access to information tables staffed by representatives from various media- and cable-related organizations.

Students can also enter a Technology Challenge or a Creative Challenge contest – two opportunities to challenge the television paradigm – with prizes for top entries, including the chance to present their ideas to an elite panel of industry executives during the forum.

Those who cannot attend in person can view the entire event live online on the Cable Mavericks Masters Forum Web site. The video will also be posted on the Web site for later viewing.

Since then, amongst other accomplishments, he has recorded music for an upcoming Walt Disney Records album and recorded his third album, Hearts Wide Open.

Career Development: What was your time at The New School like?
Gilad Hekselman: I had a great experience at the New School. I met a lot of great musicians, both teachers and fellow students and was exposed to a lot of music, materials and concepts that I might not have been exposed to otherwise. The great thing about the program is the fact that it incorporates real old school cats, that teach you the tradition closer to the way it was taught to them but you also have the access to a more academic approach. You really end up getting the best of both worlds. On top of all that, it's in New York City - the greatest place for a jazz musician to be!

CD: Were there any extra-curricular activities that helped you with your career development?
GH: New School would sometimes send us to play at places we don't always have an opportunity to play in like hospitals, homes etc. That's something I really love doing and the feeling of brightening someone's day with music is the feeling I am always looking for, whether I am playing a jazz club or a community gig of that type. That's really inspiring.

CD: What was your was your first gig? What has been you favorite gig so far?
GH: My first gig was a long time ago in Israel, where I am from in a random cafe. I've been fortunate to play with many great musicians but my favorite gig is always with my own band with Mark Turner, Joe Martin and Marcus Gilmore. They are the truth!

CD: What was it like working on the Hearts Wide Open album?
GH: The music part was a blast. The band have been playing together for a while and putting this music on a recording was a very natural, and in a way effortless, step to take. Post production was very fun too and we came up with some ideas that definitely hooked the record up and make it sound like a story rather than just a collection of tunes. The process of actually releasing it was the painful part and it took about a year after the record was done to do that. But that's all behind us and I am so excited that it's finally out there and available for people to hear and hopefully enjoy.

CD: What are you working on right now?
GH: I am still working on the release of the record. We have a few CD release tours with the band around the world and there's still a lot of work behind the release. I am also thinking about getting into the studio with the trio (with Joe and Marcus) and putting down a trio record. We know each other so well at this point and it's so easy to make music so it should be a pretty effortless thing to do.

CD: How do you balance the business side and the creative side of music?
GH: The important thing for me is to make sure that I always feel like the business part is the "coffee break" from my music practice and active journey and not the other way around. I think at this day and age, musicians end up spending more time doing their own business part where as even 10 years ago, there would be enough money in the industry for a lot of artist to just hire professionals. It's important to take care of the stuff but it's important to always remember the goal which is to make music! And to play it and share it with as many people possible and make the world a better place. That's my goal anyway.

CD: Is there any advice you would like to give to current Jazz students?
GH: Look for your own voice, through tradition, and be willing to die for your truth in this art. Always be honest to yourself, as a person and as a musician-- both on stage and when you practice. Use this practice to know yourself better and open your mind. Spread information, and love and compassion to your fellow musicians as well as to everybody else. Be kind and humble.

Non-Profit Video Documentary Internship

Project Overview:
The Community Experience Partnership (CEP) is a national initiative demonstrating the power older adults have to change and improve their communities. It is part of a larger national effort to show that the last third of life should be seen as a time of possibilities – possibilities for taking the passions, skills and experience gained from years of living and applying them to build a better society.

Untied Neighborhood Houses (UNH) was selected to develop a CEP initiative in New York City – one of nine multi-year demonstration sites across the nation. In New York’s CEP initiative, older adults are working in three low-income neighborhoods (two in Brooklyn, one in Northern Manhattan) to increase access to fresh healthy food in neighborhoods designated as food deserts. In its first year, older adults involved in New York’s project, entitled Healthy Communities Through Healthy Food, brought over 25 tons of fresh produce into these food-poor communities. Strategies include growing food on vacant city land, launching local farm stands, establishing a wholesale fresh food buyers’ club, and forming a community food council.

This video project will tell the story of the older adults involved in this work, the impact this work has on their lives, their community, and the local organizations with which they are working.

Project Description:
Creation of a 30 to 45 minute video documentary that captures the experience of and impact on the older adult participants involved in Healthy Communities through Healthy Food. This effort will:

Profile three different communities, and the local organizations seeking to increase access to fresh healthy food in the targeted neighborhoods
Document the place-based work of older adults in these communities and this initiative-- what they are doing, the roles they are playing and how they view their involvement
Explore the impact their involvement has on their lives, on their self-perception and the meaning this involvement carries for them
Record the impact these projects have on the communities and organizations in which they operate, including the added value older adults bring to the individual projects

Internship Description: The project seeks individuals with experience in film and/or video, with a special focus on social documentary work or other related disciplines. Interns would:

Help shape the overall project, including interview protocols, identification of the story’s emerging themes and the final story to be told
Capture on video conversations and interviews with project participants and key stakeholders
Create visual profiles of the three communities in which the work is occurring, and the three organizations sponsoring the local food access projects, and
Edit the final documentary.

Skills and Qualifications:
Interns should have some experience and interest in planning, implementing, videoing and/or editing documentary film or video projects, be an advanced student or graduate of a video / film program, or enrolled in a graduate level video / film school majoring in documentary film / video. Access to video cameras and editing equipment is required. Ideal applicants are self-directed individuals, able to work independently while also working in close collaboration with others, including local community members. A demonstrated ability to complete projects, meet agreed upon deadlines, and adhere to project schedule is also important.

While this is a non-payment internship, interns will be reimbursed for travel and other expenses associated with the production of the documentary. If you are a student, academic credit may be available through your institution. At the completion of the video, the work and roles of interns will be prominently credited.

Project Schedule and Time Commitment:
The documentary project will begin late September 2011, and is expected to take 12 to 13 months to complete. The project timeline consists of several phases, which will overlap: a development and planning phase (fall 2011); a documentary film / video phase (late fall 2011 through summer 2012); and a final editing phase (late summer through mid-fall 2012). Interns can apply to participate in individual phases of the project, or be involved throughout the project period. Interns will likely work 12 to 14 hours a week, although schedules will vary, and there will be a need for flexibility as some evening and weekend work is expected.

The finished documentary will be viewed at conferences and other venues across the nation, as part of a larger effort to encourage individuals, policy makers, and funders to see older adults as an untapped resource for creating change and improving their community, and to develop and support opportunities for this to occur throughout the U.S.

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the Goethe-Institut are running an international creative competition to make it clear to a broad public just how important German is as a language of science and as a means of accessing the world of science and scholarship that exists in Germany.

The two institutions are calling upon young graphic and media designers, copywriters, scholars, students and friends of the German language in Germany and abroad to take part in a competition of ideas. Whoever comes up with and submits the most convincing advertising slogan or the most appealing poster motif on the theme of “German in the Sciences” will have a chance to win one of three cash prizes. The first prize will be presented at the conference of the same name, which will take place at the Zeche Zollverein in Essen on 10 November 2011.

In the “German for Science” creative competition, entrants can let their imaginations run wild in their attempts to portray the future of the German language in science - be it in the form of a sketch, a witty advertising slogan or a sophisticated poster design. The Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft is supporting the campaign with prizes worth 5,000 euros in total.

The first prize is 3,000 euros plus a trip to Essen to attend the award ceremony. Winners of the second and third prizes will each receive 1,000 euros. The winners will be named as the original creator of the ideas, both on the Internet and within the framework of a planned series of posters which will be used at universities to advertise German as a language of science. All entries must be received by 18 September 2011 at the latest. For further career counseling advice, the career center invites you to call or visit the Office of Career Development to schedule a meeting with a career counselor.

Q: I'm interested in going to graduate school next fall and getting a master's degree within my field. What should I be doing right now in terms of the application process?

A: If you haven't started researching school already during the summer, start doing so now. Check out college and university websites, request catalogs, talk to students in the program and, if you are able to, visit schools. The most important part of this research is finding out when deadlines are. A good idea would be to make a list of deadlines, especially if you plan on applying to multiple graduate programs.

Find out if you have to take the GRE or any other admission tests as some programs require you to report test scores as a part of the application. Other programs, such as those in fine arts, do not usually require you to take the GREs but instead may require a portfolio of work. If you haven't started, work on curating the pieces you want to include.

Contact professors and alumni in regards to writing recommendation letters. The beginning of the school year is best time to ask as they will have a lot of work during midterms and finals.

Career Development: What was your time at The New School like?

Lauren Nicole Nixon: My time at The New School was very rewarding. I feel like I had a rigorous education that truly prepared me for life after college. I attended graduate school right after undergrad and earned a degree in Arts Politics at NYU. I had heard horror stories about the workload in graduate school, however I found that because of my time at The New School, grad school was very manageable. While my peers were freaking out about 20 page papers, I wasn't, because I had done really rigorous, challenging work at Lang that prepared me to be able to write and speak effectively.

CD: What were your internship experiences like?
LNN: During my time at Lang, I interned with both The Brooklyn Museum’s Sackler Center for Feminist Art and the I Have a Dream Foundation. My time as a research intern at Brooklyn Museum taught me how to be a support system for artists. Before interning at Brooklyn Museum, I had no idea how much preparation went into bringing an artists work into a museum, or any setting for that matter.

Working as a creative movement intern with the I Have a Dream Foundation taught me about flexibility. Quite often, you never know what situations your students will be in when you arrive, so you have to spend a bit of time learning to adapt to their moods, wants and needs.

CD: What was your post-college job-hunting experience like? What was your first job? What was it like working there, and why did you decide to move on, eventually?
LNN: My post-college job-hunting experience started out a bit rocky. I wasn’t necessarily sure what I wanted to do following graduate school, so I dove into the first opportunity that I was offered, which was working as a teaching artist. I will say, however, that networking was an important factor in securing that job. Networking has opened up many opportunities for me, both professionally and artistically.

CD: What is your current job and what is it like?
LNN: I currently work as an artist representative with an organization called Pentacle. I’m an agent for six dance companies: two located in NYC, one in Chicago, one in LA, one in Canada and one in Philadelphia. My companies range from Indian dance, to hip-hop, to experimental dance and dance-theatre. My job is sometimes stressful, as I'm managing the schedules of several artists at one time and helping them to tour at different theatres and festivals around the world. My favorite part of my job, however, is setting up performances and residencies for my artists at universities. Knowing that college students will experience dance on their campuses is really important to me.

CD: How have you been able to combine your creative abilities with employment?
LNN: My interest in dance studies and dance history has proven to be really helpful in my line of work. On a daily basis, my job is to “sell” dance. This means that I have to be able to speak articulately about movement to people who may or may not have experienced certain forms of dance. Being able to speak articulately about art is definitely a skill that I developed at Lang.

CD: How do you balance work and fostering your personal creative development?
LNN: For me, my work and creative development don’t exist without each other. They inform each other. So, I make it a priority to make room for both my work and creativity. Luckily, I have a really flexible work schedule. Although I work 40 hours per week, I arrive and leave when I wish, as long as I fulfill my 40 hours.

Though I believe that my work and my poetry inform each other, I maintain a balance by keeping those two worlds very separate. When I'm at work, my focus is only on work. When I'm focused on writing, I'm certainly not thinking about work. I try not to create a hierarchy of my commitments. .

CD: Is there any advice you would like to give to current students looking for internships and entry-level jobs?
LNN: Don't limit yourself! Being a dance agent never crossed my mind. However, when I was called in for an interview, I realized that my background in dance and my knowledge of performance would really allow me to thrive in this field. Taking a chance and applying for a job that I had never done was a bit daunting at first, but I found that my skill set was far more versatile than I imagined.

Also, don't let the interview process intimidate you. It's not just an employer who is looking for the right fit--you're looking for the right fit as an employee as well. Don't be afraid to ask questions.
